E-commerce Revolution: Abia State Government To Launch E-platform For Traders

Abia State government says it is working towards launching an e-platform that will drive Abia traders, in various markets and business communities,to e-commerce.

The State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu stated this at Michael Ọkpara Auditorium, Umuahia, during the public presentation of “Research Findings On Fixing The Enterprises Engine: Sustainable Solution To Open-Air Market Challenges In South East” presented by NEXTIER CAPITAL LIMITED in partnership with the State Ministry of Small & Medium Enterprise and Strategic Development Communications, Office of the Governor. He said that e-commerce is now the global trend in business, adding that fixing the enterprise engine is apt for Nigeria and more especially the South East people that are known for trade and commerce.

The Governor, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Trade & Investment, Sir. Michael Egwu said that government is making sure that the people are informed and conscientized on the new trends of market in the 21st century. He urged the participants to be the agents that would carry the message down to the target audience.

He informed that government has tried to unbundle the challenges face by trading environment through creating enabling environment and ease of doing business in the State, including fixing the infrastructural deficit bedeviling the State. He recalled that in line with its policy thrust of of promoting trade and commerce, the State sponsored youths to China to automated shoe making and established shoe factory in Aba.

He informed that his administration has given the open markets in the State face lift, hence roads leading to major markets have been constructed and government is about renovate the Ariaria and Ngwá Road market to international standard and has harmonized tax payments to avoid multiple taxation and to ensure payment of tax is seamless.

Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Strategic Development Communications, Elder Kennedy Onyenma appreciated the researchers for their wonderful findings which is an eye opener to traders and users of open markets in the South East and expressed confidence that the research work would give a road map to a better development of the markets in the South East in line with the global best practices. He thanked Governor Ikpeazu for making it possible for the event to be held in Abia State.

Contributing, the Abia State Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Small & Medium Enterprise, Mr. Nkwachukwu Agomoh described the research as a noble project assuring that Abia State government is committed to implementing it as it would take the State to eldorado.

He thanked the Governor for his continuos support to the traders and business men in the State and appreciated the partners for choosing Abia State for the event. He urged the traders to pay wrapt attention to the presentation and find solutions to the challenges bedeviling market enterprise in the South East.

In his speech, the principal partner of the project, Mr. Patrick Okigbo disclosed that the open markets today are under intense pressure but expressed hope that the leaders of the markets would make good use of the ideas and findings from the research.

He thanked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for the support the researchers received from him to arrive at their findings and commended him for considering it feat to establish a full-fledged Ministry of SME in Abia State.

Presenting his research, the Lead Researcher, Dr. Emeka Ilo listed the four areas to fix in the open market to include; governance, structural issues, issues of fire outbreak and e-commerce. He stressed the need for the traders to be sensitized on the e-commerce as the world is moving from normal open market to e-commerce as well as advised that each market in the South East States determines the best governance structure markets in the States would apply.

Contributing, the Managing Director, CHECKBEST Nigeria Limited and developers of Enyimba Mall Shopping Complex, Mr. Chiedozie Njoku described the research as a well-detailed study about markets in the South East and expressed hope that it would be implemented by government and private sectors that would want to invest in Abia State, saying that Abia State is an an investor’s haven. He advised all to tap into the 2st century business trends to develop the State.

The event attracted many dignitaries including members of ACCIMA, UCCIMA, ASMATA among other critical stakeholders
